The Diagnostic Medical Physics ("DXP") team provides clinical physics support to IU Health and its affiliated hospitals in and around the Indianapolis region. We support all testing required by federal and state statutes for medical imaging equipment including MR, CT, PET, nuclear medicine, radiography, flouroscopy, mammography, dental X-ray, and ultrasound. To schedule testing, submit a clinical service request, or get more information, please contact us.
We provide 5 primary services to the AHC and other IUH-affiliated imaging centers
  Quality Assurance Testing
Federal and state statutes require all medical imaging equipment used on patients undergo acceptance and annual testing by a Qualified Medical Physicist (QMP). Performance and documentation of these tests are key requirements for accreditation through the American College of Radiology and The Joint Commission. Our group currently provides these services for general radiography, fluoroscopy, mammography, dental x-ray, CT, MR and, nuclear medicine / PET. These activities directly impact the reimbursement status of all IU hospitals and clinics and are a primary role for our team.

  Accreditation Support
The accreditation processes for the ACR and JCAHO require specific input from physicists, including review of imaging protocols and phantom images. We also provide all equipment testing reports and personnel documentation required for QMP’s.

  Protocol Development and Optimization
Our team provides consultation to physicians and technologists in the development and optimization of advanced imaging protocols. Examples of new techniques implemented with our team’s support in 2017 are MR thermometry (Riley), fMRI (Riley), arterial spin labeling (Riley), Dixon fat/water separation (all sites), and brain and abdominal PET/MR (Goodman). We carry out bi-weekly meetings with technologists and radiologists involved in these activities to maintain communication and ensure timely response to clinical needs, as well as to identify emerging equipment and/or software issues.

  Safety
Our team chairs the MR Safety Committee and is responsible for the development, review, and implementation of safe MR practices throughout IUH. We additionally review safe clinical practice procedures for all modalities during annual testing and participate in the Radiation Safety Committee.

  Equipment Purchasing Consultation
IUH continues to pursue cutting-edge imaging technologies to improve patient care and quality of life, and our team actively participates in the vetting, review, and evaluation of new equipment.
