Our Commitment

Our work is rooted in a simple, powerful belief: a patient's access to the highest standard of care should never be determined by their zip code. As members of this community, we are deeply integrated partners with the physicians and technologists we work alongside every day.

We deliver on this promise through rigorous standardization and a commitment that goes beyond the ordinary. We operate in a high-stress environment where rapid, reliable response is critical—day or night. We do what is right, not what is easy, because the integrity of our work is absolute. We practice innovation daily, transforming clinical practice and defining the standards of tomorrow.

Our Mission

Seamlessly integrate imaging physics principles and practices into routine and advanced diagnostic imaging procedures throughout Indiana University and associated healthcare partners to optimize outcomes and improve quality of life of the patients we serve.

One State. One Standard of Excellence.

Our mandate is clear: A patient in a remote, rural imaging center receives the exact same elite standard of physics quality and safety as one at our flagship hospital in downtown Indianapolis. No exceptions. No other state network is this integrated.

We achieve this by working together with our clinical partners - technologists, radiologists, and administration - to drive system-wide harmonization of:

  • System-wide MRI Safety Committee: One set of rules, one committee, one standard of safety for the entire state, chaired and run by our team.
  • Uniform Imaging Protocols: Eliminating variability to ensure consistent, high-quality diagnostic imaging, everywhere.
  • Centralized Emergency & Incident Response: Standardized definitions and a unified command structure for tracking and responding to any event.
  • Accountability: We stand by our partners throughout the state and are available at all times. We live here, work here, and value this community and the people we serve.

This is not just a policy. It is a system-wide commitment to eliminating geographical disparities in care.

Our Impact in Action: Real-world Clinical Examples

A physicist analyzing fluoroscopic system parameters with clinical staff. A close-up of a medical imaging phantom used for quality control and dose measurement.

Challenge: Chronic Staff & Patient Dose in Interventional Radiology

Busy Interventional Radiology suites performing ERCP procedures faced a critical challenge: the cumulative, daily radiation dose from fluoroscopy was a significant occupational hazard for physicians and staff, and a major concern for patient safety.

Our Solution: A Two-Phase Algorithmic Transformation

Our team conducted a rigorous analysis of 834 procedures. First, we tested the common approach of simply reducing the frame rate from 12.5f/s to 6f/s, which yielded minimal dose reduction. Proving a deeper intervention was needed, we then deployed and validated a new dose-reduction algorithm ("Dos.Red"), which optimized both the frame rate and the system's pulse height in direct collaboration with physicians.

Result: Across the entire procedure volume, our two-phase intervention slashed the average patient dose rate by over 50% and reduced staff dosimetry monitor records by 40%, all while maintaining satisfying image quality for critical procedures like stent and bile stone removal.

Opportunity: Safer Brain Imaging for Children

A pediatric radiologist envisioned a way to perform cerebrovascular reserve function tests without injecting contrast agents, a significant step forward for patient safety.

Our Solution: From Concept to Clinic

The moment the question was asked, our team got to work. We researched, developed, and validated the advanced MRI technique, building the new protocol and QA procedures from the ground up. We turned a theoretical idea into a robust clinical tool.

Result: A new, zero-contrast diagnostic test is now in routine clinical practice, providing safer and more effective evaluation for our most vulnerable patients.

Challenge: Standardized vs. Personalized Cancer Therapy

Standardized dosing for Lu-177 Pluvicto treats all patients the same, failing to account for individual anatomy and tumor uptake, which can limit effectiveness and increase side effects.

Our Solution: Advanced Patient-Centric Dosimetry

We stood up a state-of-the-art 3D dosimetric modeling program using advanced Monte Carlo simulations. This allows us to calculate the precise radiation dose delivered to tumors and healthy organs for each individual patient.

Result: We deliver fully personalized, patient-centric treatment plans that are engineered to maximize the cancer-killing therapeutic benefit while rigorously minimizing radiation damage to healthy tissue.

Forging the Future of Medical Physics

We are more than a clinical service; we are a premier academic training ground. Our CAMPEP-accredited Diagnostic Imaging Physics Residency Program is a cornerstone of our mission, preparing the next generation of physics leaders.
